in February, Goens Brothers Painting, Inc., a Northland firm,
began leaving its mark on Union Station when it started painting
the landmark's window frames, inside and out.
Goens Brothers, headquartered at 710 N.E.
76th St. in Gladstone is among the top five painting contractors
in the Kansas City area, earning close to $4 million in 1997.
The company’s Union Station job is expected
to continue into July; said Pat Kelley, foreman for the crew
painting the station.
Last week, the crew worked on scaffolds to
paint the three large arches on the station's front side. The
color being used is a traditional dark green believed to be the
original color for the window frames at Union Station.
Kelley said the company's work carries a
sense of history. Crews working on the restoration project have
taken courses in Union Station's historical background. As for
the job itself, the foreman said it's been fairly
straightforward, with few access problems.
The job at Union Station is one of many
large-scale projects undertaken by Goens in recent years. The
company's recent jobs have included Station Casino, Liberty
Hospital, Kauffman Stadium, St. Luke's Hospital-Smithville, Walt
Disney's Future World," of the Great Plains, the Marriott-Muhlebach
expansion and Sears at Antioch Mall
"We do any kind of industrial,
commercial and restoration painting work," Kelley said.
Goens has been painting Kansas City-area
buildings and industrial facilities for more than 25 years,
Kelley said. The family-owned business is operated by Ron Goens
Sr., president and owner; Ron Goens Jr., secretary and estimator
and John Goens II, estimator.
